Ep 40: Many Paths to Designing Your Dream Life

Updated: Dec 7, 2023

Many Paths to Designing Your Dream Life | Renee and Murray on the beach

The narrative in society emphasises a certain path one must take in order to have a ‘successful’ life. This episode is an acknowledgment of the fact that there are many different paths you can take to living a life that feels enriching and supportive, and that your value is not tied up in your education, your ranking, or your results.

And so Renee starts this episode with an honouring of Murray, and the unique life path that has led him to where he is now.

Recently, after an Initiation retreat, Murray found himself talking to two of our guests, who were psychologists. During this conversation, he felt that he'd earned his seat at the table; he felt equal, that he could offer information of value, and he felt listened to. Why is this so important?

Well, if we go back in time by 10 to 15 years, experts (including those in the psychology field) were of the general consensus that Murray - seemingly 'unsuccessful' and 'uneducated' - was a bit of a write-off; that he had nothing to offer to society.

But today, Murray is using his extensive studies in Spiritus Breathwork & Somatic Healing to hold space for people from all walks of life. And it creates a particular sense of pride when he can hold this kind of space for someone who, maybe a decade or so ago, could have said he was a no-hoper.

The pride is for all the work he has done to get to this point and to hold that safe and informed space, with the depth of his life experiences behind him.

And so this episode is to highlight that there are many paths available to create a life that feels successful for you.

Take us for example. Murray left school without completing Year 10 (and, as he'll admit, he had less than a perfect attendance record for almost the entirety of his high school years, having left home at 14 years of age: he wasn't exactly an active participant in his education according to the standard Western academic system!). Meanwhile, Renee spent her teens at an academically selective high school, placing in the top percentile for the state in her final exams. And yet, here we both are, pulling up our seats next to each other at the same table, despite the fact that the paths that led us here are incredibly different.

Where will your path take you? How would you define a successful life?
